2018-2019 NEH Summer Stipends

Event Date: Monday, August 6th, 2018

Sponsored by: National Endowment for the Humanities

Only Faculty are eligible for this grant, fellowship, or residency.

UC Davis has been invited to submit two nominees to the National Endowment for the Humanities 2018-2019 Summer Stipends competition. NEH Summer Stipends support individuals pursuing advanced research that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the public’s understanding of the humanities. A Summer Stipend award provides $6,000 for two consecutive, uninterrupted months of full-time research and writing conducted in the summer 2019.

While the NEH deadline for this year’s competition is September 26, 2018, UC Davis will conduct an internal competition, as in the past, to select its two campus nominees from among its faculty; graduate students are ineligible for this award. The deadline for the internal UC Davis proposals is Monday, August 6, 2018.

Before submitting a proposal, keep in mind the following restrictions: An NEH Summer Stipend nominee must be a United States citizen or foreign national who has been living in the United States or its jurisdictions for at least three years prior to the application deadline. Individuals who have held a major fellowship or research grant within the last three academic years prior to the deadline are ineligible. A major fellowship or research grant is a postdoctoral research award that provides a stipend of at least $15,000. Individuals who have previously received Summer Stipends may apply to support a new stage in their projects. Recipients may hold other research grants during the tenure of their awards but must work full-time on their projects for the two months of their grant tenure.

Please email DHI Associate Director Molly McCarthy (molmccarthy@ucdavis.edu) with any questions regarding the application process or to review a preliminary draft.

Application Elements:
1. Project Description (not to exceed three single-spaced pages formatted with one-inch margins and a font size no smaller than eleven point.)
2. Bibliography (not to exceed one single-spaced page).
3. A short C.V. (not to exceed two pages).

Submit internal applications at http://dhi.ucdavis.edu/funding/ by 5 p.m. on Monday, August 6th. Proposals are reviewed by senior faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Campus nominees will be notified of their selection by mid-August and will be invited to work with the DHI Associate Director to refine the proposal for submission by the NEH deadline of September 26, 2018.
