The Allen G. Marr Distinguished Dissertation Award

Only Graduate Students are eligible for this grant, fellowship, or residency.

PURPOSE: The Allen G. Marr Prize was established in honor of Allen G. (Jerry) Marr’s 20 year contribution as Dean of Graduate Studies and Research and his commitment to the highest standards of scholarship and professional ethics. An annual prize is awarded by the Office of Graduate Studies to a present or past UC Davis doctoral student in honor of superior dissertation work. Each year the competition is in different discipline areas. The prize is patterned after the Council of Graduate Schools/ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Award.
SELECTION CRITERIA: The fields of competition for the 2017 award are biological sciences and humanities/fine arts. The nominated dissertation(s) should represent original work making an unusually significant contribution to the disciplines. Both methodological and substantive quality will be judged.
ELIGIBILITY: The nominee’s effective date of degree award, or the completion of doctoral degree requirements and dissertation, must fall in the period of July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. Such degree award or completion is will be confirmed by the institution’s graduate dean or other administrative officer responsible for doctoral degree programs.
DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS: March 24, 2017
REQUIRED MATERIALS: Graduate Studies Nomination Form (Form is linked on the website. Self-nominations are allowed. Simply put your name on both the nominator and nominee fields.) Each nominee must prepare a dissertation abstract (not to exceed 10 double-spaced pages). In addition, appendices containing non-textual material, such as charts or tables, may be included. The pages should be numbered and each should bear the name of the nominee. Three letters of recommendation evaluating the significance and quality of the nominee’s dissertation work. One of these letters is to be from the nominee’s dissertation supervisor, another from a member of the nominee’s dissertation committee, and the third from a person of the nominee’s choice. The nominee’s curriculum vitae (not to exceed five pages).
AWARD: The Allen G. Marr Award consists of:
· $1,300 prize
· Commencement Ceremony and will be the campus’ nominee for the CGS/ProQuest award
consisting of an honorarium of $2,000 and a certificate of citation.
All materials are to be submitted in a single PDF document to Kathryn Raley (knraley@ucdavis.edu, no later than Friday, March 24, 2017 at mindnight, in order to be considered. Application materials will not be returned.
