UC Davis has been invited by the Thematic Network Principles of Cultural Dynamics (PCD) to send two PhD students and one faculty member in the humanities or humanistic social sciences to participate in its Global Humanities Campus Summer School.  The Network is based at the Dahlem Humanities Center at the Free University of Berlin. This year’s program, scheduled to begin on July 24, 2017, consists of a two-week summer school, as well as a two-day workshop.  The summer school’s theme this year is “Digging and Reconstructing vs. Reading/Viewing and Interpreting: How Do Our Research Methods Affect Our Understanding of What Culture Is?”  The workshop’s theme is “Material Culture and Textual Culture: Different Dynamics or Different Conceptualizations?”

Participants and lecturers of the Global Humanities Campus will be coming from the following institutions: Harvard University, Mahindra Humanities Center; The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Faculty of Humanities; The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Research Institute for the Humanities; École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) Paris; The Johns Hopkins University Humanities Center; Freie Universität Berlin.

The UC Davis students selected to participate must arrange for their own travel and lodging. The Free University of Berlin will reimburse the student up to €1000 for their travel expenses and another €300 for related expenses that may include lodging. Students should arrive on July 23, the day before the program begins, and expect to stay through August 6. The UC Davis Humanities Institute will supplement the Free University’s travel stipend $500 to cover the cost of airfare.

The UC Davis faculty member selected will be expected to give a paper during the workshop portion of the program (July 25th & 26th) or teach one slot within the summer school after the workshop.  The faculty member will receive €1000 for travel expenses.  Additionally the faculty member will be accommodated in a hotel near campus for up to seven nights at the network’s expense. The UC Davis Humanities Institute will supplement the Free University’s travel stipend $500 to cover the cost of airfare.

Applicants should have their area of interest and/or research in the field of cultural dynamics (in the widest sense). Applications should include a short personal statement (400 words), as well as an abstract of the current research project (no more than 100 words).
