Lecture by Prof. Christophe Schuwey (U Fribourg/ U Lausanne/ Paris III) on 17th century literature, the news, and the book market in Early Modern Europe.

Though Donneau de Visé’s Nouvelles Nouvelles are almost unknown today, their strange composition, the variety of matters they address and their surprising structure offer an excellent opportunity to explore many long ignored aspects of seventeenth-century French literature. Far from being an exception, the book reveals in fact how classical literature is driven by a reactive book market, crafted in close proximity to current events, fashion and readers’ immediate concerns. The picture of 17th century that emerges from this study is far from our classic conception of a marmoreal, built-for-eternity French tradition that enshrined the absolutism of Louis XIV.
