Media Magic: Literary Spells, Cinematic Tricks, and the (Dis)Enchantment of the World around 1900

May 20, 2014 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Time: 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM Location: 912 Sproul

In spite of Max Weber’s well-known verdict of “the disenchantment of the world”, fin de siécle (popular) culture, critical discourse, and even science were obsessed with magic. This talk shows that the technical and epistemological novelty of media formed a main topic of discourse around 1900 and was ultimately the driving force behind these negotiations. Thus, ‘magic’ reveals a deeply ambiguous relation between technology and aesthetics–an echo of their differentiation from former ‘artes’ two centuries ago now resounding at the dawn of a new technological age.
