Nerea Calvillo: Air scapes in the Making

November 20, 2014 @ 12:10 pm - 1:30 pm

Time: 12:10 PM – 1:30 PM Location: SS&H 1246

Abstract: In the Air (www.intheair.es) and Pollen in the Air (http://pollen.intheair.es) are visualisations of the invisible components of the air, such as particles, nitrogen dioxide, pollen, etc. This presentation will address two main issues that emerge out of them. The first one relates to the modes and implications of rendering (aerial) data visible, and the second one to their making process.

The proposal of these visualisations is to create a space not only to account for air concentrations, but mostly to think with it. It is a space that enables us to temporarily cohabit with aerial components, to sense them and eventually make sense of aerial conditions. So In the Air aggregates data, to recompose it in different ways, constructing alternative air scapes that may, eventually, tell a different story about the air.

And yet it is not only the outcome what has potential for STS research. Analyzing their making process reveals how agents that are part of the aerial sociotechnical assemblage emerge, such as public institutions, newspapers, bodies, or medialabs. But not only. They also permit to question their capacity of constructing publics, to identify the collectives that are brought together in the process and to recognize other types of collectivity constructed around the atmospheric subject.

Architect, lecturer, researcher and curator, Nerea Calvillo is interested in environmental sensing, visualisations, new materialisms and collaborative production. The work produced at her office, C+ arquitectos, and her visualisation projects like In the Air have been presented, exhibited and published at international venues, such as TEDxMadrid or the Canadian Centre of Architecture (CCA). She is a doctor, a Fulbright and Poiesis Fellow (NYU), and currently is Design Critic in Architecture (GSD, Harvard University), is curator of the Connecting Cities Network European project on media facades (Medialab Prado, Madrid) and a researcher at the Citizen Sense project (Goldsmiths University of London).

This event is sponsored by Science and Technology Studies (STS)
