The Birth of Rhetoric: Plato’s Dialogues on Rhetoric and Language with James J. Murphy

November 5 @ 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Time: 04:30 pm – 06:00 pm
Location: Voorhies Hall Room 126

Join Rhetoric@Davis for our fall event, a talk by Professor Emeritus James J. Murphy on “The Birth of Rhetoric: Plato’s Dialogues on Rhetoric and Language.”

Professor Murphy will talk about how the concept of Rhetoric in its earliest days is one conclusion to questions about the nature of language raised in a set of four “dialogues” involving the teacher-philosopher Plato. Come join what promises to be a lively discussion on the continuing relevance of Plato’s dialogues today.

Professor Murphy’s scholarship in the fields of ancient, medieval, and Renaissance rhetoric, as well as the history of pedagogy of language use, spans six decades and includes 75 journal articles and book chapters and 12 books. He is currently co-editor of The Oxford Handbook for Quintilian and the book series, Landmark Essays.

Professor Murphy is Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America, a Distinguished Scholar in the National Communication Association, a Fellow of the Rhetoric Society of America, one of the four founders of the International Society for the History of Rhetoric, and founding Editor of its journal, Rhetorica, a Journal of the History of Rhetoric.
