The Lab: Knights' Landing Environmental Health Project

April 9 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Time: 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Location: Hart Hall 3201
This quarter’s Feminist Pedagogy Labs will center on lively conversations facilitated by the grantees from our grad student Experimentation Grants. Each project challenges traditional disciplinary methodologies, is interdisciplinary in nature, and furthers social justice goals through their knowledge-seeking practice.
Knights Landing Environmental Health Project
The Knights Landing Environmental Health Project was initiated in response to community concerns about cancer and possible environmental health risks in the small agricultural town of Knights Landing, CA. Our research team includes both UC Davis students and community health promoters (promotoras). Concerns about mental health and the rates of substance abuse (legal and illicit) frequently arose over our year of interactions with community members. The experiment we propose for this funding is a mental health assessment for Knights Landing residents to identify underlying differences between smoker and never smoker subpopulations.
The Lab
The Lab is a learning and sharing space to wrestle through questions together: What is a feminist or feminist science pedagogy? What does it look like in practice? What can we learn from triumphs and catastrophes in attempting feminist pedagogy in our teaching practice, with colleagues, with community beyond the academy? We aim to foster experimentation and collaboration on feminist pedagogy beyond just a reading group.
This event is sponsored by HATCH: Feminist Arts & Science Shop (a Mellon Research Initiative)
