Humanities Scholars join first cohort of Leaders for the Future

Seven Ph.D. students and postdoctoral scholars from the humanities and social sciences have been chosen to participate in the first cohort of Leaders for the Future,  a cross-campus collaboration between the Office of Research, the Internship and Career Center, GradPathways (Graduate Studies) and the Mike and Renee Child Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

This new five-month program helps PhD candidates and postdoctoral scholars to connect with applied experiences beyond academia through immersive experiences like internships, job shadowing, and support for projects outside academia. It works to foster business and innovation skills and provides training in the skills needed to excel in diverse careers across industry, government and more.

In the music department, Sarah Messbauer studies the planning and organization of Haitian-Canadian music events as a lens for illuminating current understandings of the influences of mass media, group identities, and linguistic politics in the creation and maintenance of diasporic communities in twenty-first century North America. Rebecca Kling, in English, works in victorian literature, nineteenth-century American literature, literacy studies, critical theory, prison studies, and gender theory. In communications, Tessa DeAngelo looks at how people process on-line messages. Emily Moline conducts research in literacy, sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, and gender/language in the linguistics department. Krysti Ryan explores the social forces that generate and restrict gender progress in Sociology, Kendra Tully is in Political Science, and in the Center for Environmental Science and Policy Lorie Srivastava works on estimating the economic value of various ecosystem services from the National forests in southern California.

If you are interested in applying to join next year’s cohort, or would like to learn more about the program, come to the information session on Tuesday, October 3 at 12:00 in the DeCarli Room on the second floor of the Memorial Union (make sure to RSVP to attend).
