UC Davis Faculty & Graduate Students Receive UCHRI Grants

Two UC Davis graduate students and one professor have received grants from the UC Humanities Research Institute (UCHRI) for their interdisciplinary work in the humanities. The grants will fund their work in the 2018-2019 academic year.

Kevin Smith, graduate student in Comparative Literature, received a dissertation support grant for his dissertation, Combined and Uneven Modernism: Futurist Poetry in Colonial Korea and the Global Avant-Garde. His dissertation examines the hierarchical interactions between colonial Korean and global modernisms in the 1920s and ’30s. Smith is interested in how the compressed time span of colonial Korea’s modernization as well as its belated reception of the various European and Japanese avant-gardes together challenge our existing periodizations of modernism along the contours of uneven capitalist development.

May Ee Wong, graduate student in Cultural Studies, received a dissertation support grant for her dissertation, Models of Growth: Imagining Complexity in Sustaining the Urban, which critically traces the role of ecological and systems-thinking design discourses from the 1960s onwards in creating a contemporary global model of the ‘sustainable city.’ In her dissertation, she analyzes the various ideological stakes behind the case of Southeast Asian city-state Singapore’s transition from an underdeveloped port city to a high-tech garden ‘oasis,’ and provides a critique of international urban innovation discourses that promotes the sustainable city as the solution to global problems.

Caren Kaplan, professor of American Studies, received a conference grant for her three-day workshop, “Everyday Militarisms, Transpacific Entanglements,” which will bring together collaborators from the University of Sydney, UC Davis, and other UC campuses to explore militarization and transpacific relations between cultures, lands, and waters.
