Every two years, the Gerda Henkel Foundation awards the Gerda Henkel Prize for outstanding research in the historical humanities. The prize is worth € 100,000. On behalf of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, we are delighted to invite UC Davis to nominate a candidate for the Gerda Henkel Prize 2018.

Internationally acclaimed researchers from the disciplines and funding areas supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation – Archaeology, Art History, Historical Islamic Studies, History, History of Law, History of Science, Prehistory and Early History – must be nominated before January 19th, 2018.

In addition we will be accepting nominations from the fields of the “Islam, the Modern Nation State and Transnational Movements” and “Security, Society and the State” special programmes.

Other focal points of the Foundation’s efforts are support for young scholars in the humanities in both Africa and Southeast Asia as well as for the preservation of our cultural heritage, specifically in regions experiencing crisis.

More information on the call for nominations and the selection process is available on the Gerda Henkel Foundation website (
