Día de los muertos (Day of the Dead) is a celebration to honor and remember the deceased. It is observed on November 1 and 2 in Mexico, although it is associated with other traditions such as All Saints’ Day. While many in the U.S. might see this as a day of mourning, it is, in fact, a day of celebration and remembrance. In Mexico, it is believed that while somebody’s death may mark the end of their physical presence on Earth, their soul lives on as long as we keep them in our hearts and in our memories. On these dates, families, and friends gather to pay their respects to those who have died. The traditions include the building of home altars with offerings (ofrendas) such as food, beverages, calaveras, and marigold flowers. Come to celebrate this tradition with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. It will be an opportunity to share traditional food and song, and to remember those who have departed. If you want, you can bring an offering or a photo of a loved one to place it on the altar.
