Marxist Literary Group Institute on Culture and Society 2017

Time: 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM
Location: Student Community Center

Each summer the MLG membership meets for its annual institute. Over several days members convene to present papers, hold reading groups, and conduct business. Everyone from tenured faculty, graduate students, and independent scholars participate in all activities. There are no concurrent sessions, which allows for conversations to develop over the course of the institute.

The theme, Marxism and Revolution Now, provides a timely opportunity to discuss the historical and theoretical legacies and problems of the revolutionary tradition in Marxist theory and practice, its contemporary manifestations and future possibilities. This is especially urgent at a historical conjuncture characterized by a deep economic crisis that has brought to the surface once more and more than ever before (at least in our lifetime) not only the contradictions of global capitalism and the ugly realities and consequences of material inequality in people’s lives, but also renewed discourses, forms, and possibilities of collective resistance and struggle in the political and cultural realms.

This event is sponsored by Marxist Literary Group, Davis Humanities Institute, Department of Comparative Literature, Department of English, Program in Critical Theory, Hemispheric Institute on the Americas, Department of Sociology, Department of History, College of Letters and Science
