Historian Sudipta Sen unravels the story of the Ganges, from the communities that arose on its banks to merchants that navigated its waters, and how it came to occupy a center-stage in the history and culture of the subcontinent. Weaving together geography, environmental politics, and religious history, Sen's lavishly illustrated volume is a remarkable portrait of one of the world's largest and most densely populated river basins.

The UC Davis Humanities lnstitute's Book Chat series celebrates the artistic and intellectual ventures of our faculty and allows them to share their new publications, performances, or recordings with the Davis community. Please join us for a dialogue with the author, moderated by Humanities Institute Director and Professor Jaimey Fisher.
