UC Davis has been invited to submit two nominees to the National Endowment for the Humanities 2024-2025 Summer Stipends competition. The NEH Summer Stipends program aims to stimulate new research in the humanities and its publications by supporting the work of individual scholars doing research or writing. Anyone can apply, as long as they are not a degree candidate at time of application. Junior faculty are particularly encouraged to apply. Graduate students are ineligible for this award.

While the NEH deadline for this year’s competition is September 20, 2023, UC Davis will conduct an internal competition, as in the past, to select its two campus nominees from among its faculty. The deadline for the internal UC Davis proposals is June 30, 2023. Please note that non-tenure-track faculty, adjunct faculty, staff, retired faculty, community college faculty, and independent scholars are exempt from nomination and may apply independently.

U.S. citizens, whether they reside inside or outside the United States, are eligible. Foreign nationals who have lived in the United States or its jurisdictions for at least the three years prior to the application deadline are also eligible. Foreign nationals who take up permanent residence outside the United States any time between the application deadline and the end of the period of performance will forfeit their eligibility. Leaving the U.S. on a temporary basis is permitted. Please carefully review the Notice of Funding Opportunity for all eligibility guidelines and information before submitting your proposal.

Internal Application Elements:

  1. Project Description (not to exceed three single-spaced pages formatted with one-inch margins and a font size no smaller than eleven point)
  2. Your plan of work (not to exceed one single-spaced page with one-inch margins and a font size no smaller than eleven point)
  3. Bibliography (not to exceed one single-spaced page)
  4. A short C.V. (not to exceed two pages)

Submit internal applications as a single pdf file at https://voorhies.ucdavis.edu/dhi/funding/ by 5 p.m. on Friday, June 30, 2023. Proposals are reviewed by senior faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. Campus nominees will be notified of their selection by late August.

The NEH will be offering a webinar for administrators and prospective applicants, introducing the program, describing the application and nomination process, and offering application-writing suggestions. There will be a chance to ask questions, captions will be available, and the webinar will be recorded so others can watch it later.

After the September 20 deadline, each nominating official will receive an email directly from NEH asking for verification of the selected applicants.
