Vice Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies, Peter Biehl, UC Santa Cruz has invited UC Davis to nominate one candidate for the 2023-2024 Guru Gobind Singh Fellowship

Description

In 1988 the University of California received a bequest from the late Mr. Karam Singh Maughan to establish an endowment to support a graduate fellowship named for the Sikh religious leader, Guru Gobind Singh. This fellowship opportunity is open to university graduates from a specific area of India and Pakistan (see attached map) pursuing graduate study at the University of California.

Award Stipend$30,000  

Eligibility

Applicant must:

  • be a graduate of an Indian or Pakistani university in designated area (see attached map).
  • be committed to returning to her or his country of origin after receiving degree.
  • not have engaged previously in graduate study at any other institution of higher learning in the United States.
  • have a commitment from their graduate program or faculty sponsor to pay one half the fees and one-half nonresident tuition for 2023/24. Graduate Studies will pay the remaining half if the student is awarded this fellowship as part of the Matching Commitment Program.

Preferences of nominee:  currently has master’s degree; has reached dissertation stage; have exhausted normal sources of financial support.

Application

The student must submit the following application documents:

  • Letter of introduction, asserting desire and eligibility for the award including a statement as to how one will propose to use their graduate education in their home country. Please also include whether or not you have advanced to candidacy and your planned completion date.
  • Up to 3 letters of reference emailed directly to externalfellowships@ucdavis.edu. One letter must by from the student’s faculty sponsor*).
  • University transcripts (undergraduate and graduate – copies will be accepted)
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Optional other documents that applicant feels may serve to support his/her candidacy.

 * The sponsor letter should include the following, addressed to “Guru Gobind Singh Fellowship Committee”:

  • Statement of financial need (explain that all other funding for full support of the student are exhausted)
  • Verification that the student meets the eligibility requirements
  • Reflection on how the student proposes to use his/her graduates education in their home country.
  • Statement that student’s full fees and tuition will be covered during the 2023-24 academic year.  (Note: if awarded, graduate program or faculty sponsor will pay one half nonresident tuition for 2023/24.  Graduate Studies will pay the other half.)
