The Faculty Research Fellowship is aimed at helping ladder-rank faculty in the humanities, arts and qualitative social sciences make progress on a major research or creative project. The purpose of the fellowship is to further the research or creative activity of the individual recipients and to enable faculty to meet and work with colleagues in other disciplines and departments. Projects need not be "interdisciplinary" by definition.
The fellowship will award recipients with a single course release each spring and the faculty fellows cohort meets weekly to present and discuss their research projects.
The call for applications is in late Fall and we usually fund five faculty fellows.

2023-2024 Call for Applications [Call Closed]
Deadline: Wednesday, January 4, 2023, 5:00 PM-PST
The UC Davis Humanities Institute is accepting applications for its Faculty Research Fellowships for Spring 2024. This fellowship is aimed at helping faculty in the humanities, arts, and qualitative social sciences make progress on a major research or creative project. The purpose of the fellowship is to further the research or creative activity of the individual recipients and to enable faculty within the humanities, arts, and qualitative social sciences to meet and work with colleagues in other disciplines and departments. Projects need not be "interdisciplinary" by definition, and awards will be based on the scholarly/creative merit of the individual applications. The fellowship will award recipients with a single course release in spring 2024. The recipient’s departments will receive $12,000.00 from the DHI towards the course release.
Eligibility
Ladder-rank faculty in the humanities, arts, and qualitative social sciences are eligible for the Faculty Research Fellowship. Applicants must receive permission from the chair/director of their department/program before submitting an application. All faculty are encouraged to apply, but priority will be given to those applicants who have not received a DHI Faculty Research Fellowship in the last three years.
Award Provision
All recipients will take their fellowship in the spring quarter of 2024 and meet weekly at the UC Davis Humanities Institute to informally discuss their work in the DHI’s Faculty Research Seminar.
At the conclusion of the award period, all recipients must submit a 1-page summary of the impact and outcome of the recipient’s participation in the FRF. The report is due by June 30, 2024, and must be submitted as a PDF to the DHI’s Events and Program Coordinator, Morgen Monfared (mmonfared@ucdavis.edu). Recipients must submit the report by the deadline to be eligible for future DHI funding.
Application Guidelines [to be submitted as a single document]
- Cover sheet: A cover sheet containing name, department, and abstract (no more than 200 words) of the project to be undertaken during the release from teaching.
- Project description: A detailed description of the proposed work or creative material and its significance. The description should be no more than 1500 words.
- C.V.: A two-page curriculum vitae listing publications and funding received within the last three years (2019-2022).
- A brief signed letter from the chair of the department confirming support for the proposal and acknowledgement that the fellowship, if awarded, will involve a course release in spring 2024.
Evaluation Criteria
Evaluators will score the proposals using the following criteria, with the final decision resting with the DHI’s faculty advisory board (the criteria are adapted from NEH fellowship guidelines).
- The intellectual and/or creative significance of the proposed project, including its value to humanities scholars, artists, general audiences, or all of the above.
- The promise and quality of the applicant’s work as an interpreter of the humanities and/or arts.
- The quality of the conception, definition, organization, and description of the project and the applicant’s clarity of expression.
- The feasibility and appropriateness of the proposed plan of work, including, when relevant, the soundness of the dissemination and access plans.
- Contribution to the university’s commitment to diversity using examples from two or more of these categories: service, research, and/or perspective.
