College of Letters and Science – Call for Applications
Dean’s Graduate Summer Fellowship Awards
Margrit Mondavi Graduate Fellowships
UC Humanities Consortium Graduate Fellowships
Deadline: April 23, 2021
The College of Letters and Science is pleased to announce the call for proposals for the 2021 Dean’s Graduate Summer Fellowship Awards, the Margrit Mondavi Graduate Fellowships, and the UC Humanities Consortium Graduate Fellowship.
These awards are made possible by donor and college funding for supporting excellent graduate students allowing them to advance their research over the summer. These awards are available to all PhD and MFA students enrolled in graduate degree programs in the College of Letters and Science that meet the criteria outlined below for each fellowship opportunity. Applicants may apply to all fellowships, but will receive at most one award.
Dean’s Graduate Summer Fellowship Awards:
Award Details:
Awards will range from $2,500 - $5,000. Allowable expenses include research, travel, and/or living expenses.
Eligibility criteria:
• Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.
• A financial situation such that the student may be unable to significantly advance the research program over the summer months, and the student will be unlikely to receive other forms of support. It is within the purview of the programs to determine whether an applicant meets this eligibility criterion.
- Award recipients may not receive support during the summer through the University in form of AI, TA, or GSR employment.
- Recipients may receive other competitive and departmental fellowships to supplement a Summer Fellowship Award, but the total value of all fellowships received, inclusive of the Summer Fellowship Award, cannot exceed $6,884 (the quarterly salary for a 50% TA). If the cumulative value of received fellowships exceeds $6,884, the Dean’s Graduate Summer Fellowship Award will be reduced.
- Awardees will be required to report to their graduate programs on what was accomplished under this award and how the funds were used.
Selection Process:
Applications received by the deadline will be evaluated based on the merits of the work or plans proposed. The student’s graduate program administration will provide feedback on these plans as part of the application evaluation process. Approximately 30 awards will be made for this fellowship.
Margrit Mondavi Graduate Fellowships:
Award Details:
Awards of $5,000 each to graduate students in Ph.D. and M.F.A. programs in the arts and humanities. Per the bequest, students in social science departments are not eligible for this award. The award will support travel, research, workshops, and other project-related work including living expenses in the summer of 2021.
Awardees are required to submit a brief report to the Humanities Institute on the outcomes of the summer support. Fellows will also provide a poster for display at the Fall 2022 DHI Open House, where they will discuss their posters/projects and the impact the grant had on their creative work and/or research progress to date.
Eligibility criteria:
- Applicant must be a graduate student in Ph.D. and M.F.A programs in the arts and humanities.
- Students completing their degree requirements in spring 2021 are ineligible for this award.
- Eligible proposals fall into one of two categories:
- Creative Arts: Students in the arts should address how the support will contribute to the genesis or continuation of an original piece of creative work such as a musical composition, theatrical piece, visual art, and the like. More broadly, the proposal should situate the applicant’s work in relation to the applicable field, describe its significance both in terms of their own artistic work and that of the wider field, and explain how the work relates to the applicant’s completion of a degree.
- Humanities Research: Research applicants may be continuing graduate students in the arts and humanities, and while students do not have to be ABD, the proposals should reflect a clearly defined research interest and justify the support in terms of future doctoral research.
Selection Process: Proposals will be evaluated based on the merits of the work or project proposed. Graduate programs will be solicited for endorsement for each applicant. Approximately 6 awards will be made for this fellowship.
