DHI 2021-2022 Faculty Research Fellowships

Event Date

The UC Davis Humanities Institute is accepting applications for its Faculty Research Fellowships for 2021-2022 aimed at helping faculty in the humanities, arts and qualitative social sciences make progress on a major research or creative project. The purpose of the fellowship is to further the research or creative activity of the individual recipients and to enable faculty within the humanities, arts and qualitative social sciences to meet and work with colleagues in other disciplines and departments. Projects need not be "interdisciplinary" by definition, and awards will be based on the scholarly/creative merit of the individual applications. The fellowship will award recipients with a single course release in spring 2022.

Eligibility

Ladder-rank faculty in the humanities, arts, and qualitative social sciences are eligible for the Faculty Research Fellowship. Applicants must receive permission from the chair/director of their department/program before submitting an application. All faculty are encouraged to apply, but priority will be given to those applicants who have not received a DHI Faculty Research Fellowship in the last three years.

Award Provision

All recipients will take their fellowship in the spring quarter of 2022 and meet weekly at the UC Davis Humanities Institute to informally discuss their work in the DHI’s Faculty Research Seminar.

Application Guidelines

  1. Cover sheet: A cover sheet containing name, department, and abstract (no more than 200 words) of the project to be undertaken during the leave time. The cover sheet can accompany the project description below.
  2. Project description: A detailed description of the proposed work or creative material and its significance. The description should be no more than 1200 words.
  3. C.V.: A two-page curriculum vitae.
  4. Email confirmation: A brief email from the chair of the department

Evaluation Criteria

Evaluators will score the proposals using the following criteria, with the final decision resting with the DHI advisory board (the criteria are adapted from NEH fellowship guidelines).

  1. The intellectual and/or creative significance of the proposed project, including its value to humanities scholars, artists, general audiences, or all of the above.
  2. The promise and quality of the applicant’s work as an interpreter of the humanities and/or arts.
  3. The quality of the conception, definition, organization, and description of the project and the applicant’s clarity of expression.
  4. The feasibility and appropriateness of the proposed plan of work, including, when relevant, the soundness of the dissemination and access plans.
  5. Contribution to the university’s commitment to diversity using examples from two or more of these categories: service, research, and/or perspective.
