Linguistic prescriptivism meets reality: The science of verb mood variation among heritage and monolingual speakers of Spanish
By Dr. Paul Kidhardt
The use of verb mood among both heritage and native speakers of Spanish continues to defy a unitary explanation. This talk reveals how sociolinguistic identity, family language preferences, self-talk, age, order of linguistic acquisition, and language dominance interact to influence verb mood choice, even in the face of normative expectations. We’ll explore the question of normativity through the lens of data and facts to demonstrate that heritage speakers are often embedded in bilingual contexts that catalyze the same linguistic variation and change that is observed among monolingual speakers of Spanish.
