NEH Humanities Connections: Call for Course Proposals (DEADLINE EXTENDED)

National Endowment for the Humanities

Event Date

In association with a planning grant from NEH Humanities Connections program, we are seeking course proposals for co-taught courses: the teaching teams should comprise one faculty member from science or engineering and one from the humanities or arts, to design and co-teach undergraduate courses, addressing significant issues and subjects, through a multi-disciplinary lens.

Each selected faculty member will receive $1000 in research funds (so $2000 in research funds per team). We are planning for an NEH Humanities Connections implementation grant that would start to fund the courses in 2023-24. If selected, the only requirements would be: the proposed syllabus, a diversity statement, and occasional meetings about integrating STEM and humanities/arts teaching and learning (not more than three total meetings).

A faculty steering committee, will select the courses planning to be funded.

The NEH Humanities Connections course proposals will be selected based on criteria detailed in the NEH’s call for proposals:

  • In order to address subject matter from a multi-disciplinary perspective, the co-teaching teams should pair an arts or humanities faculty member with one from the sciences or engineering;
  • Courses will be fully co-taught, with both faculty members involved in every element of the course, in the classroom and out, from beginning to end;
  • Preference will be given to courses that address subjects of major social significance in the region, nation or world;
  • Courses should address, even briefly, why (and how) the course topics benefit from the perspectives of both the conventional STEM and conventional humanities/arts and how the instructors can speak to that;
  • Courses will contribute to the University’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, based on teaching, service, research and/or perspective;
  • Courses should be 4 units and fulfill at least two of the General Education requirements (one of which may be Writing Experience); persuasive eligibility for GEs will be weighed in selection.

Please submit, via the template below, a proposed title; description, including a general course plan; a diversity statement as well as 2-page CVs for the proposed instructors.

Submit by January 14  January 28th, 2022, 5pm, to jrfisher@ucdavis.edu, with the subject line “Proposal for Course: NEH Humanities Connections.” Each team of two should submit one email with that subject line.
