Public Impact Research Grant - UC Davis Public Scholarship and Engagement

The recently completed Public Scholarship for the Public Good: An Implementation Framework for UC Davis provides a blueprint to realize goals and objectives to support and deepen publicly-engaged scholarship at UC Davis. The multi-year process that informed the implementation framework indicated that individuals:

  • acutely draw satisfaction from their public scholarship experiences, which is based on building relationships and making a difference in the world, and especially in underserved communities.
  • see the transformative effect of public collaborations on their research: public scholarship not only improves research questions and methods, but also extends projects’ longevity. 

Many believe much can be done to improve and support publicly-engaged research. For example, individuals identified a need for financial support for new collaborations and sustained interaction.
Toward this end, the Public Impact Research Initiative (PIRI) is being established through Public Scholarship and Engagement to recognize faculty and support research that will have a public impact, is useful to, and developed in concert with, diverse constituents beyond the university.

PIRI Grants

Public Impact Research is a term to describe scholarly activities that build knowledge with non-university groups in a reciprocal and collaborative manner. Collectively, these activities have an impact at different geographic scales, across sectors, and between disciplines that aim to improve the well-being of individuals, communities, and the planet.
With these goals in mind, the Public Impact Research Initiative will support research activities with non-university partners in one of the two following categories:

  1. Seed Grants to support the development of new research collaborations; and
  2. Bridge Grants to deepen, sustain, or evaluate existing collaborative research. 

Recipients of a Public Impact Research Initiative grant will receive up to $10,000 for proposed activities. Applications and supporting materials must be received by February 29, 2020. Given the purpose of the grant categories, it is expected that all funds will be distributed by March 26, 2020. Grant recipients will have up to one year to expend all funds.


Current UC Davis Academic Senate and Academic Federation members from any UC Davis location are eligible to apply.
