UC Davis Faculty and Graduate Students Receive UC Humanities Network Grants

The interests and collaborative work of UC Davis faculty were rewarded in the most recent round of grants announced by the UC Humanities Network and the UC California Studies Consortium. From forwarding the field of California studies to studying the changing conceptions of work, UC Davis remains on the cutting edge of humanities research. In particular, Keith Watenpaugh, Associate Professor and Director of the Human Rights Initiative, will now be able to expand the critical work of human rights and the humanities through the creation of a new UC Multicampus Research Group on the topic.

Here are the UC Davis-led Multicampus Research Groups awarded funding though the UC Humanities Network for 2012-2013:

  • “Re-envisioning the Human: Human Rights and Humanitarianism across the Humanities and Social Sciences: The UC HUMAN RIGHTS COLLABORATION” awarded to Keith Watenpaugh, professor in Religious Studies and Director of the Human Rights Initiative and Alison Brysk, professor of Global and International Studies at UC Santa Barbara.
  • “Consortium on California Architecture and Design,” a current MRG led by Christina Cogdell, associate professor of Design, that received renewed funding for 2012-2013.

Here is a new UC Davis-led Working Group on the Humanities and Changing Conceptions of Work, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation through the UC Humanities Network:

  • “Social Media, Insecure Work and New Conceptions of Labor Solidarity” awarded to Professor Chris Benner of Community & Human Development and Professor Jesse Drew of Cinema & Technocultural Studies Department.

Here are the UC Davis faculty and graduate students who received awards through the UC California Studies Consortium for 2012-2013:

  • “Bicycle Cultures and California Workgroup”  for the creation of a digital archive awarded to Joe Dumit, professor in Anthropology and Director of Science & Technology Studies, and Sarah McCullough, PhD candidate in the Graduate Group of Cultural Studies, by the UC California Studies Regional Seminars and Research Workgroup grant
  • “Powerful Stories/Historias Poderosa” awarded to Robert McKee Irwin, professor in Spanish & Portuguese and Chair of Graduate Group of Cultural Studies, by the UC California Studies Community Outreach and Teaching grant
  • “A Picture Perfect Indian: Re-Writing Edward Curtis’s Legacy through Hupa Woman (c) 1923 or Mary Baldy Socktish” awarded to Cutcha Risling Baldy, graduate student in Native American Studies by the UC California Studies Consortium Graduate Student Research Travel Grants
  • “Defining California through American Cookbooks of the Late Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries” awarded to Stephanie Maroney graduate student in the Graduate Group of Cultural Studies by the UC California Studies Consortium Graduate Student Research Travel Grants
