Building rapport through instructor-to-student interactions and facilitating student-to-student interactions can help promote student motivation and intellectual risk taking. In face-to-face classes, some of these interactions happen spontaneously through small talk and physical proximity to others. How can we intentionally structure and foster this same sense of connection in remote learning? In this session, participants will learn: (1) how a sense of community can help foster learning; (2) what students say helps them feel connected remotely; and (3) research-based strategies that increase connectedness online.
