Office of Research Grant Writing Bootcamp: Measuring Up: Defining Project Goals, Objectives, and Metrics

White slips of paper with words on them, including GOALS, AIMS, and OBJECTIVES

Event Date

The foundation of a good grant proposal is comprised of three components:

  • Goal: what you ultimately hope to achieve by doing the work, both in the long term and in the period of funding covered by the grant (short-term);
  • Objectives: the activities you will perform in order to achieve your goal, or for some disciplines, the theories/questions you will investigate or test (aka Aims);
  • Metrics: the criteria you will use to determine whether or not you have successfully completed your activities/tested your hypotheses/investigated your questions, and what the outcome of those activities has been.

Although there are copious resources available describing the importance of these three (GOM) components, far less resources are available to help researchers and creative professionals hone their skills in developing them.

In this session, participants will examine example sets of goals, objectives, and metrics in different types of grant proposals, exploring the good, the bad, and the wholly unfortunate. They'll be presented with practical tips for creating GOM sets of their own, including checklists to help them review their proposals alone or with peers, and have the opportunity to practice applying these new tips and insights to a new or revised set of GOMs before the session concludes.

This event is part of the Winter 2021 Grant Writing Bootcamp presented by the Office of Research.
