Let's Talk: Grant Writing and Mental Health

Event Date

Have you or someone you know ever thought or said things like:

  • "I can't believe I procrastinated on this grant again. I told myself last time I wasn't going to wait until the last minute to submit, and yet here I am... why do I do this to myself?"
  • "You know what? I know the proposal is written and everyone says it's ready, but... I'm not going to submit it. I just don't think it's good enough yet. Next time. Next time I'll do it."
  • "All of these comments are ignorant. Useless. Clearly these reviewers are totally unqualified for this panel. This program officer is completely incompetent."
  • "If I don't submit anything, I'll never get rejected."
  • "They keep commenting on my writing, but it's so hard to convey these concepts well in English. I know I'm an excellent scientist. Why can't they see that?"
  • "This is all my fault. I don't understand what I did wrong. There's no possible way I could resubmit this. I just have to throw everything out and start all over."

If you have, this workshop is for you.

Even for the most prepared and grounded among us, the stresses involved in seeking funding for your work can be incredibly challenging. But by increasing your awareness of those stress points, and by actively cultivating practical strategies to neutralize those stressors before they become too acute, you can substantially reduce their impact.

By the end of this session, participants will have:

  • A chart mapping out the different types of stressors that most commonly affect grant writers during the proposal development process
  • A beginning list of practical strategies for reducing or neutralizing those stressors, (developed through beta testing with UC Davis grant writers)
  • A template "individualized grant writing support plan" for each participant to complete, applying the knowledge they gain during the session

*Reminder: This event is open to UC Davis affiliates only. Individuals who do not use their @ucdavis.edu email addresses when registering will be removed.*
