Percussion Ensemble: “Loose Ends”

Event Date

Location
Recital Hall, Ann E. Pitzer Center

The Percussion Ensemble concert titled “Loose Ends” will bring to stage pieces that were pandemic-delayed. The student group will play music by Andy Akiho, John Cage, Alice Gomez and others.

“These are pieces that we began before the pandemic or attempted to muscle through remotely,” said Chris Froh, director of the ensemble and music department lecturer who will perform on one piece. “The concert reflects the ad-hoc nature of instant remote learning. Students will be playing conventional instruments like marimbas and vibraphones, but also scrapers, lighters — the kind that produce fire — and radios.”

Students planned to collaborate with Sandbox Percussion during a residency at the music department last year, but that was canceled due to COVID-19. The ensemble will unveil a new arrangement of Akiho’s Karakurenai that the students created online with Sandbox Percussion. “It’s an awesome arrangement,” Froh said.
