RELIGION & MEDICINE: EAST AND WEST

This two-day lecture series recognizes that concepts and perceptions of medicine, illness, and the human body are deeply rooted in and shaped by cultural, political, and religious contexts. The encounter between religion and medicine goes back to the beginning of human history. Often, religious beliefs provided the framework for explaining and curing disease and alleviating suffering, and the first medical practitioners were priests, shamans, and magicians. Religion and medicine are still deeply entwined across the globe, continuing to shape political and ethical discourses responding to the issues of our times.
