Supporting Mentees in Finding Fellowship and Grant Opportunities

Event Date

There is a wide range of fellowship and grant funding opportunities available to graduate students and postdocs, but it can often be difficult to figure out how to support mentees in finding the best opportunities for their needs.

By the end of this workshop hosted by UC Davis Graduate Studies and the Interdisciplinary Research Support team, faculty mentors will leave with the following resources to share with graduate students and postdocs:
• A review chart explaining different types of graduate student and postdoc funding
• A review chart identifying which funding types are appropriate for which career stages
• A template for establishing written expectations regarding lab and grad group/department grant writing goals for graduate students and postdocs
• A resource list of funding opportunity databases
• A list of tips for Pivot, the web's most powerful grant search database
• A flowchart reviewing the Lead-Prospect-Match approach to using search databases in an organized and stress-free way
• A list of resources available to support graduate students and postdocs in preparing and revising applications
• A template for establishing written guidelines regarding the process for requesting advice and feedback and others during proposal development

The workshop will also review opportunities for faculty to secure grant funding support for graduate students and postdocs via research grants, research grant supplements, and institutional training grants and provide time for Q&A with faculty on campus who have a strong record of grantsmanship mentoring.
