Your first attempt to get funding from your target sponsor was.... not successful. So what do you do? Though writing fatigue, harsh reviewer comments, or busy schedules are certainly all discouraging, most funding agency staff are heartily enthusiastic about researchers revising and resubmitting proposals. As one program officer put it, "Getting that news is rough. But it's rougher to throw out that proposal, and with it the chance of your project being funded."
So once some time has passed and you're ready to take another look, how should you approach the revision process? What makes revising and submitting a grant proposal different from, say, a journal article or other written material? And what are some grantsmanship pitfalls unique to the resubmission process to be aware of and avoid?
In this session, participants will address all three of the questions above, leaving with:
- Better understandings of the factors that influence grant funding decisions, and how to apply this knowledge to their revision and resubmission process
- A chart comparing the differences between the R&R process for grant proposals and other genres of writing
- A list of the unique challenges associated with R&R that are not a factor during first-round proposal submission, accompanied by strategies for mitigating those challenges
- Templates for typical grant R&R processes they can adapt to suit their needs.
